AREAS WE SERVE

Fighting for Clients Across Carteret County

From Beaufort to Emerald Isle, Tetterton Law Firm defends clients in every corner of Carteret County.

Every Carteret County Case Is Heard in the Same Place

Carteret County runs from Newport in the west out to the Down East communities, and along the whole length of Bogue Banks. Wherever in the county you were charged — a beach town in July, Highway 24 heading toward Jacksonville, the waterfront in Beaufort at midnight — your case goes to the courthouse in Beaufort.

Many of the people we defend do not live in Carteret County. They were visiting for a week in the summer. They were driving through on Highway 70 and did not slow down coming into town. They are stationed at Cherry Point or Camp Lejeune and were heading back to base. They came for a fishing tournament, or a festival, or a day at the beach.

What decides whether we can help is not your address. It is where you were charged. If that was Carteret County, your case is in our courthouse, and being three hours away does not change that. It usually makes local counsel more useful, not less — someone has to be in that courtroom, and it does not have to be you for every setting.

Our practice is limited to Carteret County. If you were charged somewhere else, we would suggest finding an attorney in that county.

The Towns We Serve

Charges here are not the same everywhere. Different towns mean different agencies, different roads, and different charges. Each page below covers what actually happens in that town.

Beaufort — the county seat. The courthouse is here, and so is our office, at 313 Turner Street. Downtown waterfront charges, speeding coming down the bridge, and boating while impaired on Taylor’s Creek.
Morehead City — seven different agencies can charge you here, from the city police to Port Police to Marine Patrol. DWI leaving the downtown waterfront, and speeding where Highway 70 becomes Arendell Street.
Newport — a Newport address does not mean Newport police. The town, a stretch of Highway 70 and a stretch of Highway 24 all share the name, and the town force only patrols part of it.
Atlantic Beach — the bridge from Morehead City, the beach bars, and DWI charges after a day in the sun or coming in off a boat.
Pine Knoll Shores — most people charged here were driving the length of the island rather than going anywhere in town. Highway 58 speed enforcement, and DWI stopped in transit.
Indian Beach — a handful of beach houses and condominiums, and very few charges. Almost everything comes off Highway 58.
Emerald Isle — the far end of the island. The roundabouts catch impaired drivers, the pier draws crowds, and the Saint Patrick’s Day festival brings its own cluster of charges.
Cape Carteret — the speed limit was recently lowered and is being enforced hard. Coming from Morehead City you have been driving 55 and suddenly it is 35.
Cedar Point — no town police department at all. A short stretch of Highway 24 worked by the Highway Patrol and the Sheriff.
Harkers Island — the Sheriff on land, Marine Patrol and Wildlife officers on the water. Fishing and boating charges rather than traffic.

Not listed above but still Carteret County — Cedar Island, Smyrna, Otway, Marshallberg, Straits, Gloucester, Sea Level, Stella and the rest of the Down East communities. If you were charged anywhere in the county, call us.
